The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) recently announced the winners of the 2024 IFA Science Awards, which recognises researchers who have made outstanding contributions to plant nutrition science and sustainable agriculture.
Dr Deli Chen, Balco’s Chief Scientific Adviser and Professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia, was awarded the IFA Norman Borlaug Plant Nutrition Award for his pioneering research on sustainable food production and the environmental management of reactive nitrogen.
The International Fertilizer Association (IFA) serves as a vital platform for the global fertiliser industry. The association is dedicated to promoting plant nutrition science and sustainable agricultural development, contributing to global food security and environmental protection. The IFA Science Award, one of the highest honours in the fertiliser industry, has recognised numerous groundbreaking researchers in crop nutrition since 1993. Through the introduction of the “Emerging Scholar” category, the IFA also demonstrates its support for future leaders in agriculture.
Professor Deli Chen has focused extensively on nitrogen fertiliser management, a core challenge for sustainable agriculture. His research aims to reduce nitrogen fertiliser losses in the environment while optimising crop yields and quality. His work has significantly advanced the science of plant nutrition and provided valuable insights for global agriculture to tackle the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability.
As Balco’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Chen has integrated his findings into the company’s feed science innovations. His focus on the application of oat grass in animal nutrition and health has enabled the company to develop higher-quality products and enhance its market competitiveness. His guidance has had a profound impact on Balco’s research, technological advancements, and international collaborations.
Alzbeta Klein, CEO and Director General of the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), highlighted the significance of the award recipients at the ceremony. “The achievements of these outstanding scientists exemplify the spirit of innovation and dedication that drives the work of IFA. Their research shows how science can address today’s most pressing challenges to make agriculture more sustainable and resilient. We are proud to recognise their efforts and look forward to the continued impact of their research in the future.”
In his acceptance speech, Professor Chen expressed his gratitude and commitment. “I am deeply honoured to receive the IFA Norman Borlaug Award for Plant Nutrition. My research is dedicated to solving the urgent challenge of reducing nitrogen losses to the environment while increasing crop yields. This recognition motivates me to continue working with scientists and policymakers to promote sustainable agriculture and create more possibilities for the future.”
